NIHR

How is NIHR CRN structured?

The NIHR Clinical Research Network comprises of a number of individual Clinical Research Networks and a national Coordinating Centre (NIHR CRN CC).

Clinical Research Networks
Clinical Research Networks in England have been established to support work in the areas of cancer, dementias and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, medicines for children, mental health, primary care and stroke. A Comprehensive Clinical Research Network has also been created to support research in all other areas of diseas and clinical need.

Each Clinical Research Network consists of a number of Local Research Networks that coordinate and facilitate the conduct of clinical research within a specific geographical area of England. Each Network, with the exception of the Primary Care Research Network and the Comprehensive Clinical Research Network is overseen by its own Coordinating Centre.

The NIHR CRN CC oversees the development and functioning of all the NIHR Clinical Research Networks and specific teams within the NIHR CRN CC manage the Primary Care Research Network and the Comprehensive Clincal Research Network.

The Clinical Research Networks in England work closely with partners in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to facilitate the delivery of clinical research across the whole of the UK.

NIHR CRN CC's remit has expanded significantly since its creation and the development of the Comprehensive Clinical Research Network.

A whole systems approach
The NIHR CRN CC is not just concerned with the development of NHS infrastructure. The Coordinating Centre is also leading on work which will improve the clinical research environment as a whole. Although the Clinical Research Networks form a key part of the requirement, there are other key areas which are being developed in parallel. They include:

  • Industry liaison
  • The NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio
  • Research management and governance
  • Regulatory and governance advice
  • Patient and public involvement
  • Experimental medicine
  • Workforce development
  • Information systems
  • Clinical Trials Units
  • Information management
  • Network communications
