Funding Schemes
In addition to infrastructure support, UKCRC partners have established grant funding schemes to support research that is likely to utilise experimental medicine infrastructure. These schemes include:
- UKCRC Translational Infection Research Initiative
This initiative will establish a number major collaborative research groupings that will both conduct high quality, goal-oriented research and build academic capacity, training and infrastructure in the field. In addition the initiative will provide Strategy Development Grants to enable researchers to develop realistic and relevant research strategies and partnerships. Full details here
- MRC Translational Vaccine Research
An MRC Strategic Review Group recently reviewed MRC's contribution to vaccine research. It included UK and international vaccine experts from academia, industry, biotech and government. Its findings were that the MRC's research portfolio is strong in immunology and pathogen biology research underpinning vaccines R&D (reflecting the UK's strengths) but, with a few notable exceptions, there is little MRC funded translation of this novel science either to products or policies. This call aims to address this gap by stimulating and funding vaccine related research with convincing, defined translational outcomes. Full details are available here
- MRC Experimental Medicine 2
Building on an earlier initiative in this area MRC is launching a second wave of funding for ‘proof of concept’ studies to continue to strengthen experimental medicine research in the UK. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) will partner MRC in this Call for Proposals. This will be one of a suite of initiatives and funding opportunities available for experimental medicine over the next few years. Full details are available here
