Information Services, NHS National Services Scotland collects, validates, interprets and disseminates information on Health and Health and Social Care in Scotland, providing support and advice to the Scottish Executive Department of Health, NHS Board, social care organisations, and to a variety of professional bodies and researchers.
We are now looking to recruit a Quality of Life Trial Coordinator who will undertake the coordination of all Quality of Life aspects of the SUPREMO cancer clinical trial in accordance with GCP (Good Clinical Practice) and the European Union Directive. You will work as a member of the Cancer Clinical Trials Team and will be based at Gyle Square, Edinburgh, however, you may be expected to travel throughout the UK.
The postholder will be educated to at least degree level. Clinical Trials experience in either the academic or the pharmaceutical industry would be an advantage. Good communication skills are essential as you will be required to liaise with clinicians involved in the trials and to participate in trials team meetings.
A knowledge of computer database packages is essential as you will be expected to assist in maintaining trials databases. In addition you will be expected to play a full part in the running of the Cancer Clinical Trials Team.
The Cancer Clinical Trials Team forms part of CaCTUS (Cancer Clinical Trials Unit Scotland) which is a partnership between the Cancer Research UK Trials Unit in Glasgow and the ISD Cancer Clinical Trials Team in Edinburgh. CaCTUS is accredited by the UK National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) and offers support for all aspects of management of cancer clinical trials.

The National Collaborating Centre for Cancer (NCC-C) has been commissioned by NICE to update an evidence-based clinical guideline on the “diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer” and is currently looking to recruit a clinical lead for the Guideline Development Group (GDG).
GDG clinical leads are drawn from the NHS, healthcare professionals, patients and carers and academia. They do not represent their organisations but are selected for their expertise, experience of working with multidisciplinary and lay colleagues and understanding of evidence based healthcare. All members of GDGs have equal status, which reflects the relevance and importance of their different expertise and experience. They include health professionals and researchers as well as patient and carer members. All Group members need to attend regular meetings and undertake background reading.
Skills and experience
We are looking for and individual who is a practicing senior healthcare professional with demonstrable relevant experience and clinical knowledge in the field of lung cancer. Applicants will have experience of working on national or regional committees or working groups. Strong interpersonal skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills are required along with an ability to communicate complex issues to differing audiences. The clinical lead will be responsible for working with the staff of the NCC-C, the guideline chair and the GDG to develop, write and quality assure drafts of the guideline. They will also provide expert knowledge on lung cancer and act as a source of clinical advice to the guideline chair and NCC-C staff in the identification and review of evidence.
Time commitment and conditions
The clinical lead will be required to contribute to the scoping, development and validation phases of the guideline which will take approximately 2.5 years to complete. During the 18 month development phase there will be approximately 15 GDG meetings held every 6-8 weeks, alternating between London and Cardiff. These meetings will be a mixture of one and two-day events. The first meeting of the GDG is scheduled to take place in December 2008.

Track-HD Project – Clinical Trial Project Manager

Applications are invited for a highly experienced Clinical Trial Project Manager, to undertake full management of the Track-HD Trial. Track-HD is an innovative multi-centre, global, prospective observational study with no experimental treatment. Its primary objective is to determine what combination of measures is the most sensitive for detecting change over the natural course of pre-manifest and early Huntington’s disease (HD), with a view to validating these as potential outcome measures for use in future therapeutic trials. Track-HD uses full electronic data capture and incorporates a number of novel imaging and clinical assessment tools. The first four proposed sites are in: London, Paris, Leiden and Vancouver with close links with bio repositories/clinical research organisations (CROs) in Milan and New York, the imaging repository in Los Angeles and the Euro-HD Network clinical database repository in Ulm, Germany. Some travel between these sites will be required. Track-HD is funded by the CHDI Foundation Inc, New York, which is a charitable foundation dedicated to finding treatments for HD.
The post offers full responsibility for project management deliverables (timelines, budgets and management of CROs) and line management duties, as well as the opportunity to contribute to the scientific strategy and scientific conduct of the study in conjunction with the Global Principal Investigator. Some flexibility in working hours available. Applicants must demonstrate a strong scientific academic background (PhD or equivalent experience) as well as an excellent record in project management of multi-national clinical trials. Strong leadership, good inter-personal skills, and a focus on high quality data are essential.
Salary on UCL’s Grade 9 scale up to £60,000 pa inclusive of London Allowance and market premium, superannuable. The post is available immediately and is funded for one year in the first instance, renewable on an annual basis for a total of three years.

This is a great opportunity for a nursing professional to develop their skills and expertise in clinical research. This post is part of a newly funded National Assembly research support initiative in health and social care – the Clinical Research Collaboration Cymru. The new Research Nurse will work on research coordinated by the Children & Young People’s Health & Social Care Research Network but may be called on to support research in other areas. Experience of working with children and/or young people is essential.
The trials and research projects involved address a wide range of issues including therapeutic treatments, and health and social care interventions. You will work with researchers and practitioners on a range of projects, helping to initiate them, to recruit children, young people and their families/carers , support and engage them in the research and co-ordinate their care whilst they are taking part in the study. You will collect and collate data, carry out research related assessments and will ensure that the research is conducted to good clinical practice regulations.
The successful candidate will be educated to degree/equivalent professional level with at least 2 years working at Band 5 or E Grade level and two of those working in a paediatric setting. They should be computer literate, with excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. Knowledge of and experience of healthcare research is desirable. The role will involve travel to research sites across the region so applicants will need access to a car and a clean driving licence.

These will include remote electronic data capture from NHS or academic institutions and pharmaceutical or government agencies, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements. You will be designing, developing & implementing IT systems, including web based systems, relational databases and current trial data management software (in particular InferMed MACRO and Teleform) to support trials (and other rigorous quantitative studies) in the design and management of data capture, analysis, dissemination & archiving. You will be working closely with and supporting trial statisticians, trial managers, clinicians, research nurses and data entry clerks; therefore excellent communication skills and the willingness to travel are essential.
You will need to be self-motivated, innovative, adaptable and resilient, with the ability to work effectively in the context of change, in multi-disciplinary teams with people of diverse skills, experience & backgrounds. You may be required to represent the research institute outside the university. Therefore the commitment to ensure confidentiality at all times is essential.
