Clinical Director

The Cumbria and Lancashire CLRN Director is Professor John Goodacre.

Professor John Goodacre (MD PhD FRCP) is Director of Clinical Research at the Lancashire School of Health and Postgraduate Medicine (LSHPM) and Honorary Consultant in Rheumatology at the Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre NHS Trust. He qualified in Medicine at the University of Nottingham and worked in the University Department of Medicine at Nottingham before moving to the Department of Medicine at the University of Newcastle, where he completed his clinical specialist training in Rheumatology. He developed his scientific knowledge and skills in biomedicine and led an interdisciplinary research team to investigate mechanisms and treatments for autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Since his appointment to the LSHPM in 1998 he has led the introduction of thematic Interdisciplinary Research & Teaching Groups to support cross-sectoral collaborative programmes of health-related research, drawing upon a broad range of scientific fields. His work has also led to the introduction of novel modular postgraduate programmes for doctors and health professionals, developed through close University / NHS collaboration and integrated closely with new national frameworks for professional development within these disciplines, to support the acquisition and application of skills in research and critical clinical practice by the NHS workforce. He is a member of the MRC College of Experts and of EU FP6 and FP7 expert panels. He is UK advisor to the Government of Bulgaria on strategic planning and funding for the development of national capability for research in clinical and biomedical sciences and Public Health. His appointments within the North West region include membership of the executive board of TrusTECH and external advisor to the scientific board of the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility in Manchester.

Core Team

The Core Team is led by Margaret Cooper, Senior Manager. The Lead RM&G Manager is John Wardle, the Information Manager is Jonathan Aitchison and Margaret Johnson is the CLRN Administrator.

Executive Group

The day to day operation of the CLRN is supported by an Executive Group, led by the Clinical Director, which has representation from primary, secondary and tertiary care and mental health. This Group is currently being established.
