
Clinical Director
The Clinical Director for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight CLRN is Professor John Primrose.
Professor Primrose is Professor of Surgery at the University of Southampton. He qualified in Glasgow and undertook surgical training in Leeds becoming Senior Lecturer in Surgery there in 1989. He was appointed to the Chair of Surgery in Southampton in 1993. His clinical interests are in gastrointestinal cancer, especially liver malignancy. The hepatobiliary unit in Southampton is now a high volume surgical centre for the treatment of cancer affecting the liver and pancreas. His research interests are in translational cancer research and large scale clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancer. He is currently Chief Investigator of four major cancer trials. He has served on a number of grant funding bodies, currently the Clinical and Translational Research Committee and the Translational Research in Clinical Trials Committee (both CRUK). He is also Director of Education of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and has major role with the Surgical Royal Colleges in revalidation and recertification.
Executive Group
The day to day operation of the CLRN is supported by an Executive Group, led by the CLRN Clinical Director, which has representation from primary, secondary or tertiary care and mental health.

Greta Westwood - CLRN Senior Manager
Greta has a PhD in Nursing and a clinical background in Clinical Genetics and NHS service delivery. She qualified as a nurse in 1983, a midwife in 1987 and completed a MSc in Health Psychology in 1996. Following her move to the Wessex Clinical Genetics Service, Greta held a joint Clinical Practitioner/Academic post in Southampton University Hospitals Trust and the University of Southampton whilst completing her PhD. In 2008 she moved to research management, initially as the Lead RM&G Manager for HIOW CLRN and now as the Senior Manager. She completed her PhD in 2009.
In her current role Greta's leadership interests include the promotion of high functioning teams and networks, and in particular the development of research nurses and other associates who support NHS clinical research.

Rebecca McKay – CLRN Lead RM&G Manager
Rebecca has been involved in clinical research for 15 years in the UK and USA in a variety of nursing and managerial roles in NHS and commercial organisations. Rebecca joined the HIOW CLRN in 2009 as Industry Manager and is currently seconded to the position of Lead RM&G Manager.
Rebecca has oversight of RM&G in the NHS member organisations in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. A new NIHR initiative Lead CLRN is aimed at helping local chief investigators set-up multicentre research studies across the UK.

Martine Cross – CLRN Industry Manager
Martine began her career in research management and governance in 2000 within Primary Care. During this time she carried out and contributed to a number of research projects and has published and presented at local research network conferences as well as internationally. Martine has published a number of papers in peer-review journals relating to medical education within general practice. Previously qualified as a Biomedical Scientist in haematology and transfusion she gained a BA (Hons) in Communication and Media Production at Bournemouth University and subsequently completed an MSc in Health Research & Development in 2008. Martine has a ‘portfolio’ career and combines hers work as CLRN Industry Liaison Manager with her role as a Research & Development Manager for Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, a post she has held since 2004. In a voluntary role Martine is a Community Responder for South-Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust and this has provided her with valuable insight into the pre-hospital care environment.

Arlene Lee – Senior Research Nurse – CLRN Portfolio Manager
Arlene qualified as a nurse in May 2003. Since then, she has worked as a cancer nurse at St. Bartholomew Hospital and as a sister on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Kings College Hospital. Arlene completed a BSc (Hons) in Cancer Nursing in 2007 and is currently undertaking an MSc in Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care.
Arlene moved into clinical research at Barts and the London NHS Trust in 2008 and became the Senior Research Nurse - Portfolio Manager for HIOW CLRN in June 2009. She leads in the provision and maintenance of high quality research management for NIHR non- commercial portfolio studies to meet both local and national priorities across the HIOW CLRN.
As a Senior Research Nurse, Arlene is committed to the development of a highly skilled and competent workforce and co-ordinates activities to support HIOW CLRN funded Research Nurses and the development of the HIOW CLRN Research Nurse Forum.

Kelly Waller – CLRN RM&G Manager
Kelly has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Psychology and has been involved in Clinical Research at Southampton General Hospital since 2002. Initially employed in the Pharmacy Department at Southampton University Hospitals Trust, she co-ordinated a large portfolio of commercial & non-commercial pharmaceutical research. During her time in this role Kelly was heavily involved in the initiation, monitoring and close-down of studies. In 2006, she moved on to provide data management support to a number of local oncology studies, liaising with patients & researchers in a clinical setting. A new role in R&D followed, during which time she was responsible for conducting the governance checks for & approving NIHR Portfolio studies.
In her current role Kelly’s interests include Quality Assurance of global & local governance checks for portfolio studies and the provision of high quality, interactive GCP Training for researchers & their teams

Kathryn Power – CLRN Information Manager
Kathryn has a HND in Law and is an Associate of the Chartered Management Institute.
Kathryn’s previous experience includes Business Analysis and Commodities and Foreign Exchange Investigations from her time at JPMorgan and Barclays Capital in Canary Wharf. In 2008 Kathryn joined the NHS, taking on a role in South Western Ambulance Service Trust. She then moved to Southampton University Hospitals Trust to work as an Analyst within Income Management before joining HIOW CLRN.

Emily Horsfall – CLRN Research Governance Officer
Emily began her career in the NHS in 2000 and joined the CLRN in 2008. Before working with the CLRN she spent 6 years as an administrator for a community mental health team. Emily is currently completing the first module of an MSc in Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care.
In her current role Emily supports the RM&G Manager to deliver the research governance aims of the CLRN, in particular overseeing the Coordinated System for Gaining NHS Permission (CSP) and to ensure NHS approval is achieved in a timely manner.

Layla Jacobs – CLRN Administrator/PA to Greta Westwood
Layla joined the CLRN in January 2010 having previously worked as an Assistant Manager for a private Dental Practice on the Isle of Wight. Layla has recently taken on further responsibilities by combining her role as CLRN Administrator with the role of P.A to Dr Greta Westwood. She is currently studying part time for a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design.

Tobias Carleton-Prangnell – CLRN EDGE Administrator
Tobias has a BSc in Computer Science, is a Microsoft Certified Professional and Professional member of the BCS Chartered Trust for IT.
Tobias’s previous experience includes working for Southampton City Council as an IT Systems Developer and then later as a Web Developer. Tobias joined Southampton University’s Cancer Sciences Division, Clinical Informatics Research Unit as an IT Systems Analyst and has worked on a number of projects including EDGE. In June 2010 Tobias joined the HIOW CLRN to manage EDGE.
