Present roles
Professor in Anaesthesia and Pain Management – University of Leicester, Director of Research and Development and Honorary Consultant – University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
David has been a research-active, clinical academic in Leicester since 1989. For the past 5 years, he has been Director of R&D for the University Hospitals of Leicester. Through membership of many local, national and international Committees, Councils and Boards, David has influenced and facilitated research strategy for many years. During his personal research career, he has been involved in the conduct of clinical trials in Pain Management and Anaesthesia that have led to many peer-reviewed publications.
He is supported by Co-Director Professor Azhar Farooqi.
Professor Azhar Farooqi qualified from the University of Manchester Medical School in 1983,and has been a GP at the East Leicester Medical Practice since 1987. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1991.
Professor Farooqi's main research interests have been in diabetes and ethnic minority health issues. He has published over 50 peer reviewed papers as well as several book chapters.He helped establish and chaired the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Primary Care Research Alliance and his own practice was one of the first to achieve investigator led research accreditation status from the RCGP. In 2006 he became a GP member of the SEM Diabetes Network Committee. Professor Farooqi's national work has included advisory work for Diabetes UK, The British Heart Foundation and the Department of Health -including helping to develop of the Diabetes NSF.
In 2007 Professor Farooqi was awarded the OBE for services to medicine and health services.
Core Team
The Core Team is led by Elizabeth Kettle, Senior Manager. The team also comprises Lead RM&G Manager, Roz Sorrie; Information Manager, Paul Maslowski and Administrator, Rachel Starkey who have all commenced post.
Executive Group
The day to day operation of the CLRN is supported by an Executive Group, led by the Clinical Director, which has representation from primary, secondary and tertiary care and mental health. This Group has been established.
