NIHR

Part A - For TCRN / PCRN staff involved with Chief Investigators (CIs) from the very beginning of starting a project

Since 18 November 2008, CIs who want to start a new research project and also add it to the NIHR portfolio (e.g. TCRN/PCRN projects) have to use IRAS to do so.

IRAS is the new system for applying for permissions and approvals for research in the UK. It replaced the NRES form system and provides a single point of application for review by all applicable regulatory bodies, e.g. ethics committees and MHRA as well as being an entry point for NIHR CSP. Anyone who is helping a CI in this process will need to be familiar with IRAS.

IRAS can be accessed at www.myresearchproject.org.uk and is easy to use. IRAS provides an online training module that is also accessed from the help page in IRAS. It is self-explanatory and holds help pages and a manual that can be printed off. The actual IRAS form also contains question specific guidance throughout the document.

The flow chart shows the main points of getting a project through from induction through to NHS permission and where TCRN/PCRN staff fit in.
