Part B - For TCRN / PCRN staff involved with Principal Investigators (PIs) at the point of getting local approvals through site specific assessments

Since 18 November 2008, PIs who want to take part in a research project have to submit their information for local site specific assessment via IRAS.

IRAS is the new system for applying for permissions and approvals for research in the UK. It replaced the NRES form system and provides a single point of application for review by all applicable regulatory bodies, e.g. ethics committees and MHRA as well as being an entry point for NIHR CSP.

IRAS can be accessed at www.myresearchproject.org.uk and is easy to use. It is self-explanatory and holds help pages and a manual that can be printed off. The actual IRAS form also contains question specific guidance throughout the document. IRAS provides an online training module that is also accessed from the help page in IRAS.

The flow chart shows the main points of getting a project through from the time the PI submits the site specific information (SSI) form until NHS permission is given and where TCRN/PCRN staff fit in.
