Western CLRN Launch Event, September 2008

The Western Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN) was officially launched on Thursday 25 September at an all day event held at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

Although the opening of the Cabot Circus shopping centre threatened traffic gridlock in central Bristol 114 delegates attended from across the region, including representatives from constituent NHS Trusts and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), local Topic Specific Clinical Research Networks, the local Primary Care Research Network, other research organisations and key stakeholders.

The day started with an introduction by Dr Jonathan Sheffield, Medical Director of University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (host organisation for the Western CLRN), and was followed by keynote speaker Professor William Rosenberg, Deputy Director of NIHR CRN CC, who spoke about the background to and latest developments in the Comprehensive Clinical Research Network. Dr Stephen Falk, Clinical Director of the Western CLRN, then spoke on the development of the Western CLRN and highlighted issues facing it over the coming months. Other stakeholders presented during the day on a diverse range of topics, including the new Research Design Service in the South West, NIHR CRN CC led RM&G developments, Biomedical Research Units, and an Research and Development Manager’s perspective of working with networks.

Feedback on the day was overwhelmingly positive, and we would like to thank all delegates who attended for making the launch such a great success.
