The MRC General Practice Research Framework
The Medical Research Council (MRC) General Practice Research Framework (GPRF) is a UK-wide network of practices involved in clinical trials, epidemiology and health services research. It was set up in 1973 for a MRC mild hypertension trial and in 1986 the MRC formally approved the development of the GPRF into a national research resource. There are currently 912 member practices and 12 externally funded projects being coordinated and run through the network. Most GPRF studies are managed by practice based nurses supported by the coordinating centre senior nursing team.
GPRF and PCRN are increasingly working together and many practices undertake research with both organisations. PCRN Local Research Networks have provided significant support to a number of recent GPRF studies including IID2, ProCEED, Flu-watch and the Industry PASS which was much appreciated. Further information can be found on the GPRF website.
