PCRN Portfolio of Clinical Studies

The PCRN Portfolio is a subset of the NIHR Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) Portfolio and comprises those studies that are conducted wholly or partially in primary care settings. This means it covers a wide spectrum of disease and conditions and includes studies of promotion of health, prevention of disease, early diagnosis of illness, screening for disease and the clinical management of long term conditions. It also includes studies on vaccines and palliative care, as well as common illnesses such as sore throats, ear ache and influenza.

Only those studies eligible for inclusion in the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio have access to the infrastructure support provided by PCRN or any of the other NIHR Clinical Research Networks.

In England, the Department of Health has determined that clinical research which involves the NHS that are funded by NIHR, other areas of Government, and NIHR non-commercial Partners are automatically eligible to be included in the Portfolio.

NIHR Partners are those organisations that:

  • award research funds as a result of open competition with high quality peer review
  • fund research that is of clear value to the NHS
  • take account of Department of Health and NHS priorities.
Other studies, such as industry sponsored studies, those which are industry- funded but academically-sponsored or those funded by overseas governments may be considered for inclusion in the NIHR CRN Portfolio by undergoing an adoption process.

Once a study is included in the Portfolio study teams are be required to upload accrual/recruitment information for all UK sites directly to the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio database on a monthly basis. PCRN staff are available to support this process.

If you would like more information the PCRN Portfolio or to find out if your study is eligible for inclusion please contact the PCRN Coordinating Centre Team:
