Stroke Research Network (SRN)

Stroke Research NetworkThe purpose of the NIHR Stroke Research Network (NIHR SRN) is to provide the health service infrastructure to facilitate the conduct of clinical trials and other well designed studies in stroke        across the full spectrum of disease treatment and prevention through our local research networks       and national co-ordinating centre. NIHR SRN works closely with stroke research networks and structures in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Objectives are to:

  • Develop a world-class health service infrastructure for stroke research
  • Support the set-up and running of stroke research studies
  • Involve people who have had a stroke, their carers and the public in stroke research
  • Involve researchers from academia and industry, and a wide range of professionalbackgrounds in stroke research
  • Develop a portfolio of stroke research studies that covers the whole range of stroke prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care
  • Work with professional, industry, academia and funding bodies to enhance the quality and increase the volume of stroke research in the UK

Networks
The following Networks have been established:

  • North East (Hosted by City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, led by Dr Chris Price)
  • North West (Hosted by Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, led by Dr Pippa Tyrell)
  • South East (Hosted by St George’s Health NHS Trust, led by Professor Hugh Markus)
  • South West Peninsula (Hosted by Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, led by Dr Martin James)
  • Thames (Hosted by University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, led by Professor Martin Brown)
  • Trent (Hosted by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, led by Dr Tom Robinson)
  • West Midlands (Hosted by North Staffordshire NHS Trust, led by Dr Christine Roffe)
  • Yorkshire (Hosted by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, led by Dr Anne Forster)
  • Scottish Stroke Research Network (Led by Professor Peter Langhorne)

Scottish Stroke Research Network
The Scottish Stroke Research Network is led by Professor Peter Langhorne. It works closely with Local Research Networks in England to provide support for stroke clinical research.

Northern Ireland
NICRN (Stroke) is one of nine topics specific research networks developed in Northern Ireland under the umbrella of the Northern Ireland Clinical research Network (NICRN) hosted within the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, one of five NHS Trusts across the province. Is NICRN is funded by the Research and Development Office which is a directorate of the Northern Ireland Health and Social Services Central Services Agency.

Wales Clinical Research Collaboration Cynru
In Wales, stroke research is supported by the Older People and Ageing Network, one of nine thematic research networks of the Clinical Research Collaboration-Cymru (CRC-Cymru), funded by the Wales Office of Research and Development (WORD). A stroke Research Group has been established to act as a focus to encourage and guide, initiate and coordinate research in the field of stroke in Wales.

Clinical Studies Groups

Clinical Studies Groups are responsible for the development of stroke studies within their research strand, including identifying gaps in research; and proposing and /or developing new studies.

Our Clinical Studies Groups focus on seven research strands:

  • Acute care
  • Biostatistics and Informatics
  • Prevention
  • Primary care
  • Rehabilitation
  • Translational Research
  • Patient, Carer and Public Involvement.

The Stroke Research Network Coordinating Centre

A consortium led by the University of Newcastle has been appointed to act as the Coordinating Centre for the Network, directed by Professor Gary Ford supported by Assistant Director, Sine Littlewood.
