Aim
The aim is to provide guidance in dealing with personal information to minimise risk of unauthorised or unintended disclosure.
Learning Outcomes
Following the course, participants will be able to:
- Recognise the need to maintain good personal and professional data security
- Summarise the basic provisions of The Data Protection Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000
- Know the duties of the Information Commissioner
- Have an awareness of other professional, regulatory or employment duties to maintain confidential information
- Be familiar with the practical elements of maintaining good data security.
Programme
The course will cover the following topics:
- The importance of protecting personal data and considering the types of harm that can be caused by the revelation of personal data to those who should not see it
- Background to and principles of Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation
- Duties of the Information Commissioner and enforcement of the legislation
- Other personal, professional and employment duties/ obligations in respect of data security in terms of legal duties at common law and professional regulation
- Data Protection and good practice in the workplace
- Data mining and the organised and illegal methods of obtaining personal data
- Problem areas, research access, definitions, uncovering information that individuals may not wish to know, Ethics Committees and Data Protection
- Links to confidentiality and Caldicott guardians.
Further Information The information given during the course will be supported by the use of examples and scenarios that the delegates will be expected to participate in. Delegates should be prepared to engage in group activities and in identifying issues from their own work situation (It is not envisaged that role play will from part of the activities). Delegates will be encouraged to consider how data protection issues can affect their own work situation.
Duration This is a one day course
Cancellation Policy UKCRN courses are offered free of charge to all staff and public and patient representatives working on or associated with the UKCRN portfolio of studies. Networks and host organisations are expected to pay travel, accommodation and other additional expenses incurred by their nominated staff. Failure to take up a pre-booked, confirmed place without giving the necessary notice will incur a £75.00 charge to cover part of the UKCRN Coordinating Centre’s costs.
