Introduction to Experimental Medicine Research

Aim
The aim of this course is to raise knowledge and understanding of experimental medicine research within the NIHR CRN CC's and to alert Network Staff to the opportunities for experimental medicine.
Learning Outcomes
Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand what experimental medicine is and place experimental medicine in the research continuum
- Understand the crucial role experimental medicine studies play in developing hypotheses for large clinical trials
- Recognise opportunities for experimental medicine research
- Understand particular challenges for experimental medicine research (eg paediatrics)
- Know how to access the experimental medicine infrastructure available across the UK.
Programme The course will cover the following topics:
- An introduction to experimental medicine – definition, context, importance
- UK infrastructure for experimental medicine
- Challenges of and opportunities for nesting experimental medicine studies in Network trials
- Challenges for experimental medicine studies (eg in paediatrics or vulnerable adults)
- Key methodologies (eg genomics and imaging)
- Governance eg Human Tissue Act.
Further Information
This course will aim to bring together experts in experimental medicine across the Networks including a number of the TCRN Experimental Medicine Leads. The key aim of the course is to increase the understanding of experimental medicine within the Networks and to enthuse and engage Network staff in the opportunities for experimental medicine. The course is aimed at research network nurses and trial coordinators.
